Houston, We Have a Rivalry — and Finally Another “W”
ARRR, the Captain sailed west expecting oil wells, cattle and perhaps a few unattended barrels of rum. What caught his eye instead was something far more valuable to his ongoing Raymond James Stadium campaign: a retractable roof.
“A roof that opens and closes?” he whispered. “Parrot, take measurements.”
“Captain,” came the reply, “that is an NFL stadium, not a parts warehouse.”
Tampa Bay and Houston have met only seven times in the regular season. The Bucs won the first meeting in 2003, then dropped five straight before Baker Mayfield and the 2025 Buccaneers engineered a final-minute escape in Houston to snap the streak.
September 15, 2025: Houston, We Have a “W”

Tampa Bay’s first regular-season victory in the city of Houston arrived in dramatic fashion on Monday Night Football. Baker Mayfield completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bucs controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes.
Houston took a 19–14 lead with 2:10 remaining after Nick Chubb broke a 25-yard touchdown run. Mayfield then kept the final drive alive with a fourth-down scramble, Bucky Irving broke loose on a 22-yard catch-and-run, and Mike Evans helped move the ball into the red zone.
With nine seconds left and two timeouts available, Tampa Bay handed the ball to Rachaad White, who powered in from two yards for the game-winning touchdown. The victory moved the Bucs to 2–0 and ended a five-game losing streak against Houston.

Tampa Bay and Houston have never met in the playoffs. The Texans compete in the AFC and the Buccaneers in the NFC, so a postseason matchup would have to occur in the Super Bowl.

Buccaneers Memories Against Houston
2003 · The First Meeting
Tampa Bay won the first game in the series, 16–3, at Raymond James Stadium. That remains one of only two Buccaneers victories against the Texans.
2023 · Six Seconds Too Many
The Bucs took a 37–33 lead with 46 seconds remaining, but rookie C.J. Stroud answered with a 75-yard drive and threw the winning touchdown to Tank Dell with six seconds left. Houston won 39–37.
2025 · The Streak Ends
Tampa Bay’s final-minute 20–19 win broke a five-game losing streak in the series and delivered the franchise’s first regular-season victory in Houston.

Tampa Bay–Houston Connections
The franchises are young as opponents, but their paths cross through players, coaches and the NFL’s rotating interconference schedule. The 17th regular-season game introduced in 2021 created the 2025 meeting halfway between the normal four-year rotations because both clubs had finished first in their divisions in 2024.
The original page described the Texans as “formerly the Houston Oilers.” That is corrected here: the Texans are a separate expansion franchise. The Oilers relocated to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans; their history does not belong to the Texans.
For the Captain, there is another connection worth noting: both Raymond James Stadium and Houston’s home have hosted Super Bowls, but only Houston has a retractable roof. He considers this “suspiciously relevant.”

From Expansion Bid to AFC South Contender
After the Oilers left Houston for Tennessee, businessman Bob McNair pursued an NFL expansion franchise. On October 6, 1999, league owners awarded Houston the NFL’s 32nd franchise.
The team was officially named the Houston Texans in 2000 and began play in 2002. Houston won its inaugural regular-season game against Dallas, 19–10.
The Texans reached the playoffs for the first time in 2011. By the middle of the 2020s, the DeMeco Ryans era had produced three consecutive playoff appearances through 2025, including a 12–5 season and the franchise’s first road playoff victory.

Reliant Stadium: The Roof That Tempts the Captain
Houston’s stadium opened in 2002 as Reliant Stadium and was the NFL’s first stadium built with a retractable roof and natural grass playing field. It became NRG Stadium in 2014.
In August 2026, the venue returned to its original Reliant Stadium name for the Texans’ 25th season. That means the Buccaneers’ 2007 visit belongs under Reliant Stadium, while the 2015, 2023 and 2025 games were played during the NRG Stadium era.
The Captain has formally asked whether the roof can be “borrowed on non-game days.” No answer has been received.

Deep Steel Blue, Battle Red & H-Town
Houston’s identity is built around Deep Steel Blue, Battle Red and Liberty White, with the bull-head logo incorporating a lone star. In 2024 the franchise introduced a major uniform redesign, expanding its combinations while keeping the bull identity at the center.
For 2026, the Texans are celebrating their 25th season and will debut a new NFL x Nike Rivalries uniform at Reliant Stadium against Indianapolis on November 19. The Rivalries concept extends the club’s H-Town identity with a city-focused design.
The Captain approves of “Battle Red,” but insists “Pewter Pirate” remains the superior shade for treasure acquisition.

TORO is the Texans’ bull mascot and a fixture at community events and home games.
Battle Red
Battle Red games encourage the stadium to turn red, pairing the club’s alternate identity with one of its loudest home-field traditions.
The Bull Pen
The north end-zone fan section became known for concentrated crowd energy, tailgating and organized traditions that helped establish a distinct identity for the NFL’s youngest franchise.
“A Bull Pen?” the Captain asked. “Excellent. Keep the bull there while I inspect the roof controls.”
