Alex Anzalone arrived in Tampa Bay with a familiar address and a new responsibility. His family had spent offseasons here for years; now his football work belonged here, too. The veteran linebacker brought experience from New Orleans and Detroit, then earned his new teammates’ vote as a Buccaneers captain. His Tampa homecoming; the 2026 captains.
For the Krewe, that combination is easy to appreciate: a player who knows the demands of an NFL season, helps the younger men beside him and can still change a possession when the ball comes his way.
New Orleans → Detroit → Tampa Bay
Three teams, a decade of experience
2017–2020 The start in New Orleans.
The Saints selected Anzalone on April 28, 2017, taking the Florida linebacker 76th overall. His first four NFL seasons came in New Orleans. A shoulder injury cut his rookie year to four games, but his Saints chapter eventually included postseason appearances in the 2018 and 2020 seasons. Draft announcement; rookie-season account; career postseason record.
2021–2025 A larger role in Detroit.
Detroit signed him on March 24, 2021. He recorded his first 100-tackle season in 2022, finishing with 125, then raised that mark to 129 in 2023. Those seasons show the workload he grew into with the Lions: regular responsibility in the middle of the defense and production to match. Joining Detroit; 2022 review; 2023 review.
2026 A new jersey in a familiar city.
On March 12, 2026, Anzalone signed a two-year contract with Tampa Bay. He entered his tenth NFL season with a new defense to learn and experience to share. Eight games into his Buccaneers tenure, he had started every week and recorded three interceptions. Signing announcement; 2026 game log.

Week 8 • A shutout at home
Anzalone intercepted Michael Penix Jr. twice in the opening quarter, recording the first two-interception game of his NFL career. Tampa Bay finished the afternoon with a 16–0 victory. For No. 34, the early takeaways supplied a memorable personal contribution to a defense that kept Atlanta off the scoreboard. Official game report.
On the first pick, he showed pressure near the edge before dropping into the flat and stepping in front of Drake London. On the second, he read Penix while retreating into coverage and intercepted a pass toward Jahan Dotson. His afternoon also included six combined tackles.
A closing play in Dallas. On October 8, Anzalone intercepted Dak Prescott in the fourth quarter to seal Tampa Bay’s 24–16 win. The Atlanta pair brought his season total to three. Dallas game report; the interception highlight.
A captain’s voice • A family’s home
Experience he can pass along
Respect earned in two locker rooms
Anzalone wore the captain’s “C” in all five Detroit seasons. His selection by Buccaneers teammates in 2026 continued that responsibility in a new organization. Captaincy offers a useful measure of how the players around him regard his work. Tampa Bay’s captain announcement.
That work was visible during the offseason alongside rookie Josiah Trotter. The Buccaneers documented Anzalone offering reminders from the sideline and helping the younger linebacker recognize assignments. He settled into the weakside “Mo” role in Todd Bowles’ defense while becoming a resource for Trotter. The club’s account of their work together.
Tampa already meant something
According to the Buccaneers, Anzalone had spent every offseason in Tampa with his family since 2017. He had also trained with Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr. before joining them as a teammate. His family accompanied him when he signed in March, making the move a personal occasion as well as a football decision. The homecoming feature.
The Florida connection extends beyond his own playing career. A university feature identifies his wife, Lindsey, as former Gators soccer player Lindsey Cooper and describes their established home in the Tampa Bay area. Florida’s family and education feature.

Wyomissing → Gainesville
A Gator who kept learning
A state title, then the SEC
At Wyomissing Area High School, Anzalone played on both sides of the ball. His senior team went 16–0 in 2012 and won the school’s first Pennsylvania Class AA state championship. He later joined Florida, where his college seasons ran from 2013 through 2016. Florida’s biography.
Injuries interrupted his progress: a shoulder injury ended 2015 after two games, and a broken forearm at Arkansas ended 2016 after eight. His final season still produced 53 tackles and three sacks. Florida’s season summaries. Across the school’s statistical rows, he finished with 75 tackles and five tackles for loss. Pro Day record (PDF).
Work beyond the practice field
Anzalone graduated in August 2016 with a degree in Sport Management. Years later, Florida documented his return to graduate coursework while playing in the NFL, including classes during the pandemic shutdown. That account describes a player continuing his education around the demands of his profession. The commencement announcement; his return to coursework.
- SEC Academic Honor Roll: 2014, 2015 and 2016.
- Florida’s Chris Patrick Courage Award: 2014.

Giving time beyond football
Food boxes and conversations with young people
Helping prepare Thanksgiving meals
On November 11, 2025, Anzalone joined a Thanksgiving meal-packing event at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Taylor, Michigan. The Lions’ photographs show him packing boxes with other participants. It is a concrete example of community work during his Detroit years: lending time to help prepare food for local families. The official event gallery.
Encouraging students through CHAMPS
In April 2025, Athletes for Hope highlighted Anzalone’s participation in its CHAMPS program, which promotes youth leadership, fitness and mental-health awareness. The organization also pictured him leading a virtual visit. Alongside the food-bank work, it offers another view of his willingness to give his time away from the stadium. The next chapter belongs to Tampa Bay
Watch the middle of the defense
Anzalone gives Buccaneers fans several reasons to follow No. 34: the patience required to build an NFL career, the responsibility of a captain and the anticipation of a defender reading a pass. His first Tampa season is still unfolding. The Atlanta afternoon has already given the Krewe one game to remember.
