A road trip powered by family pride

Captain Booty had the pleasure of meeting Cody Mauch’s grandparents during their stay at the Hacienda Hotel in New Port Richey. They were touring the country by car, collecting adventures along the way and making stops at Cody’s games to cheer him on.

As they shared stories from the road, their pride in their grandson shone through. Captain Booty came away with a simple impression: great people and wonderfully proud grandparents. Their travels added a special family story to the Buccaneers journey of No. 69.

A walk-on’s path to the heart of the line

Cody Mauch brought a walk-on’s persistence and a tackle’s movement skills to the Buccaneers’ interior line. The long red hair and familiar smile made him easy to recognize. His transition to right guard gave Tampa Bay a young blocker with room to grow alongside the rest of its front five.

He arrived at North Dakota State as a tight end, developed into an All-American tackle and became Tampa Bay’s second-round selection in 2023. The Buccaneers moved up two spots to draft him, then put him in the starting lineup for every game of his rookie regular season. College transformation • Draft report • 2023 game log.

After another 17-start season in 2024, a knee injury ended his 2025 campaign after two games. His return in 2026 has brought him back to his place in the lineup, with eight starts through November 1. 2025 roster announcement • Return to practice • 2026 game log.

The Buccaneers chapter

2023–present: learning, growing and returning

Tampa Bay selected Mauch on April 28, 2023, after sending picks 50 and 179 to Green Bay for the 48th selection. He signed his four-year rookie contract on July 24 and made the move from college tackle to NFL guard. Draft trade • Rookie contract announcement.

2023 A new position and a full season

Mauch started all 17 regular-season games at right guard, then both playoff games. The rookie season included a division title and a 32–9 wild-card victory over Philadelphia, giving him early experience in meaningful January football.

Regular season • Playoffs • Team history.

2024 Strength, timing and continuity

His second season brought another 17 starts. Tampa Bay’s analysis highlighted better pulling and combination blocks with right tackle Luke Goedeke. Mauch had spent the offseason adding strength while refining the timing that lets neighboring linemen work together.

Development feature • Draft class review.

2025–2026 Injury, rehabilitation and a return

Mauch finished the 2025 Houston game despite a knee injury, then went on injured reserve on September 18. He was a full participant when organized team activities began in May 2026 and has started all eight games of the new season so far.

TAMPA BAY   /   ATLANTA

324 team rushing yards
A new Buccaneers single-game record.

324 YARDS ON THE GROUND

Bucky Irving: 170 rushing yards
Kenny Gainwell: 140 rushing yards

Mauch was in Tampa Bay’s starting lineup as the Buccaneers shut out Atlanta and established a franchise rushing record. Irving and Gainwell both crossed 100 yards, matching a feat last achieved for the club by Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn on November 1, 1998.

For a guard, a day like this puts the work up front in focus: opening a crease, staying connected on a combination block and giving the runner room to finish. The 324 yards belong to the team, with the offensive line, tight ends, receivers and backs sharing the work.

The making of a Buccaneer

A tight end grows into a tackle

Mauch played nine-man football at Hankinson High School in North Dakota. He entered NDSU in 2017 as a walk-on tight end at roughly 220 pounds, then moved to the offensive line during spring practice in 2018. His frame and role changed as he developed into a college tackle.

By his final season, he had become one of the FCS’s most recognized blockers. He received the FCS Athletic Directors Association’s top offensive lineman honor in 2022 and earned first-team Associated Press All-America recognition.

Moving inside for the NFL

Guard presented a new set of demands after Mauch spent most of his college starts at left tackle. Interior defenders arrive quickly, and working in step with the center and tackle matters on both passing plays and runs.

In its 2024 coverage, Tampa Bay emphasized his growing strength and communication with Goedeke. The club’s review of that season also praised his movement as a pulling guard—coming across behind the line to lead a run—and his progress with hand placement and combination blocks.

Returning to familiar work

The 2025 injury interrupted a run of 36 consecutive regular-season starts. Tampa Bay’s May 2026 report described Mauch’s relief at joining his teammates for a full practice again. That return restored an experienced member of an offensive line that had played together during the club’s successful 2024 running season.

The injury ended his 2025 season after two appearances. His 2026 game log confirms the return to regular-season action. Official return feature • Current season log.
