WEEK 2 RECAP: A TEN-POINT LEAD SLIPS AWAY, AND TAMPA BAY'S LAST DRIVE ENDS AT THE CLEVELAND 20 AFTER A LONG LIGHTNING DELAY.

Tampa Bay's 2026 home opener ended with a 23-19 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, September 20. The Buccaneers led by ten points in the third quarter and regained the lead in the fourth, but Deshaun Watson's touchdown pass to Blake Whiteheart put Cleveland ahead with 3:51 remaining. Tampa Bay's final possession carried into a 132-minute lightning delay before ending on downs at the Browns' 20-yard line.

The Bucs outgained Cleveland 313-267 and won the rushing-yardage comparison 137-44, but they produced only one touchdown in four red-zone trips. Chase McLaughlin made all four field-goal attempts and his lone extra point for 13 of Tampa Bay's 19 points. Baker Mayfield finished 21-for-34 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Bucky Irving rushed 17 times for 89 yards, including a 38-yard gain in the opening quarter.

After forcing a punt on Cleveland's opening possession, Tampa Bay benefited from two Browns penalties and a 12-yard Chris Godwin Jr. run. McLaughlin finished the drive with a 59-yard field goal at 11:10. Cleveland answered with Andre Szmyt's 50-yarder to tie it at three, but Irving's 38-yard run quickly moved the Bucs back into scoring range. McLaughlin's 45-yard kick restored the lead to 6-3 with 4:02 left in the first quarter.

Cleveland's best early opportunity came when Myles Harden intercepted a pass intended for Ted Hurst III and returned it 25 yards to the Tampa Bay 28. An unnecessary-roughness penalty helped move the Browns closer, but the Bucs held them to another field goal. David Walker opened the second quarter with an eight-yard sack of Watson, and Szmyt eventually made a 34-yard kick to tie the game at six. Neither offense reached the end zone during the first half.

Tampa Bay's defense then created a short field of its own. With 2:50 left in the second quarter, Elijah Roberts stopped Quinshon Judkins for no gain on fourth-and-one at Cleveland's 34. Kenny Gainwell supplied two first-down runs on the resulting possession, but the drive stalled after reaching the Browns' 11. McLaughlin's 31-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining sent the Bucs to halftime ahead 9-6. Cleveland managed only 59 net yards before the break.

The Buccaneers opened the second half with their strongest touchdown drive. Mayfield hit Godwin for 24 yards, Irving added a 14-yard run, and the quarterback converted two third downs with his legs. A nine-yard scramble on third-and-nine brought Tampa Bay to the Cleveland five. Mayfield then found Emeka Egbuka for a five-yard touchdown, completing a nine-play, 65-yard possession. McLaughlin's extra point made it 16-6 with 9:33 left in the third quarter.

Cleveland responded with an 11-play drive that ended in Szmyt's third field goal, cutting the margin to seven. Tampa Bay won a replay challenge that changed an incompletion into a 13-yard Cade Otton reception on its next possession, but a rushing loss and two incompletions forced a punt. The Browns needed only three counted plays to cover 83 yards on their next drive. A Tampa Bay facemask penalty helped them reach their own 45, and Watson's 55-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Boston tied the score at 16 with 1:23 left in the third quarter.

The Bucs moved ahead once more early in the fourth. Godwin's 14-yard reception moved the chains, and Tez Johnson followed with a 49-yard catch to the Cleveland 21. Tampa Bay reached the 13 before an incomplete third-down pass brought out McLaughlin for another 31-yard field goal. The 19-16 lead lasted one Cleveland possession. Watson guided a 12-play, 68-yard drive that consumed 6:07 and converted all four of its third downs, finishing with the 17-yard touchdown pass to Whiteheart for Cleveland's first lead.

Kameron Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards to the Tampa Bay 49, giving the Bucs favorable field position for their answer. Completions to Otton and Godwin, along with Irving's running, moved the ball to the Cleveland 28 at the two-minute warning. Nearby lightning stopped the game there. When play resumed after more than two hours, Tampa Bay still needed a touchdown to win, with heavy rain adding to the difficulty of the final drive.

Irving converted a third-and-one with a six-yard run after the delay, and Hurst's six-yard catch brought the Bucs to the 13 with 45 seconds remaining. A holding penalty moved them back ten yards. An incompletion and a short Mayfield scramble left fourth-and-11 at the Cleveland 20. With 22 seconds on the clock, Mayfield's pass toward Egbuka in the end zone fell incomplete. Watson took a final kneel-down, and a game lasting five hours and 15 minutes was over.

Watson completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Boston led Cleveland in receiving yards with five catches for 95 yards. For Tampa Bay, Tez Johnson's one catch supplied a team-high 49 receiving yards, while Otton led in receptions with five for 38. Josiah Trotter recorded 11 tackles, Alex Anzalone added eight and Benjamin Morrison had seven. Walker and A'Shawn Robinson each registered a sack. The Buccaneers fell to 0-2, and the Browns improved to 1-1.
