Tampa Bay jumped out to a 27–0 lead by the third quarter, and the Patriots did not even have a first down until the second half. Mike Alstott rushed for 91 yards and one touchdown.

In a game highlighted by a special performance of the Buccaneer defense, the Patriots’ dominating offensive attack was grounded, managing under 100 total yards until a 75-yard drive in the game’s final two minutes.
