Steel City, Terrible Towels & One Painful Overtime Bill
ARRR, the Captain has inspected Pittsburgh’s bridges, counted the yellow towels, and concluded that Steelers Nation has entirely too much fabric for a crew that refuses to donate any of it to the Raymond James Stadium roof fund.
“Six Lombardis, a riverfront stadium and enough Terrible Towels to cover a small county,” he muttered. “Surely they can spare a few yards of canvas.”
The Parrot disagreed. “Those are rally towels, Captain. They are not roofing membrane.”
The rivalry itself is infrequent but memorable: Tampa Bay’s first win came in 1998, its first victory in Pittsburgh arrived in 2014, and the latest meeting became a 2026 overtime heartbreak after the Bucs carried a 16–3 lead into the fourth quarter.

October 18, 2026: The Booty Slipped Away in Overtime
Steelers 26, Buccaneers 19 (OT) · Raymond James Stadium · Tampa
Tampa Bay had the treasure chest open. The Bucs led 16–3 entering the fourth quarter, had pressured Aaron Rodgers throughout the afternoon, and appeared positioned to collect another much-needed victory. Pittsburgh instead scored on five consecutive possessions spanning the fourth quarter and overtime.
Jalon Daniels completed 22 of 43 passes for 164 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Emeka Egbuka caught seven passes for 48 yards and Tampa Bay’s only touchdown. The defense produced five sacks of Rodgers, including two by David Walker.
Chase McLaughlin’s 53-yard field goal with eight seconds left tied the game at 19. Pittsburgh then opened overtime with a 12-play, 70-yard drive ending in Rodgers’ six-yard touchdown pass to Germie Bernard. Tampa Bay’s answer ended on fourth down when Jalen Ramsey sacked Daniels.
Captain Booty’s audit: A 13-point fourth-quarter advantage is not legal tender until the clock reaches zero. The Parrot has now written that sentence on the treasure bag in permanent ink.

The 2026 season brought a major coaching transition. Mike McCarthy became the Steelers’ 17th head coach and only the fourth person hired to that position by Pittsburgh since 1969. His staff includes former Buccaneers tight ends coach Brian Angelichio as offensive coordinator.

Buccaneers Memories: Two Wins Worth Keeping

Tampa Bay’s first victory in the series came at Raymond James Stadium. The Buccaneers defense intercepted Kordell Stewart three times and limited Pittsburgh to a single field goal. After seven previous years of frustration against the Steelers, the Bucs finally cracked the black-and-gold code.

The second victory was even more dramatic. Mike Glennon connected with Vincent Jackson for a five-yard touchdown with seven seconds remaining, producing Tampa Bay’s first win in Pittsburgh and snapping an 0–3 start.
“Seven seconds?” said the Captain. “Plenty of time to load the cannons.”
“You have never loaded anything in seven seconds,” replied the Parrot.

The Tampa–Pittsburgh Bridge
Mike Tomlin
Before becoming Pittsburgh’s head coach in 2007, Tomlin coached the Buccaneers’ defensive backs from 2001 through 2005. His Tampa years linked him to a defense that was already establishing itself among the league’s elite.
Bruce Arians
Arians coached Pittsburgh’s wide receivers and later served as offensive coordinator before eventually becoming Tampa Bay’s head coach. His Buccaneers tenure culminated in the Super Bowl LV championship.
Brian Angelichio
Pittsburgh’s 2026 offensive coordinator coached Tampa Bay tight ends in 2012 and 2013, giving the current Steelers staff a direct Buccaneers connection.

Steel City Football: From the Pirates to Six Lombardis
The franchise was founded by Art Rooney in 1933 and originally entered the NFL as the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Steelers name arrived in 1940. For decades the club struggled to find sustained success; then the 1970s changed the identity of the organization and much of the league around it.
The Steel Curtain dynasty
Pittsburgh won four Super Bowls in six seasons: IX, X, XIII and XIV. The defense, the running game and a Hall of Fame-heavy roster made the Steelers one of the defining franchises of the era—just as the expansion Buccaneers were trying to establish themselves.
Two more championships
Pittsburgh later won Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII. The latter was played at Raymond James Stadium on February 1, 2009, where the Steelers defeated Arizona 27–23. In total, Pittsburgh has played in eight Super Bowls and won six.

Three Rivers, Heinz and Acrisure
Three Rivers Stadium
Tampa Bay’s earliest trips to Pittsburgh were played at Three Rivers Stadium, the multipurpose riverfront building that became synonymous with the 1970s dynasty.
Heinz Field → Acrisure Stadium
The current stadium opened in 2001 and carried the Heinz Field name through 2021 before becoming Acrisure Stadium in 2022. The Buccaneers’ 2014 win was therefore a Heinz Field victory, while the 2022 loss belongs under the Acrisure name.
2026 upgrades
The stadium marked its 25th anniversary season in 2026 with a new playing surface, expanded food options and other fan-experience upgrades.

Black, Gold and a 1933 Time Machine
The Steelers’ black-and-gold identity has become one of the NFL’s most recognizable looks. The helmet logo remains unusual because it appears on only one side.
The 1933 throwback
Pittsburgh introduced a modernized 1933 throwback in 2025: gold jersey, black striping, oversized white numbers, a Pittsburgh city crest, beige pants and a matte gold helmet. Team president Art Rooney II said the throwback would remain part of the 2026 plan.
The Captain approves of the gold. The Parrot has warned him that uniform accents are not “loose treasure.”

Terrible Towels, Renegade and Steely McBeam
The Terrible Towel
Broadcaster Myron Cope created the Terrible Towel tradition in 1975. It became a worldwide Steelers symbol, and royalties from officially licensed products support Merakey Allegheny Valley School.
Renegade
The Styx song “Renegade” has been used as a key stadium hype moment since the early 2000s, typically arriving when Pittsburgh’s defense needs the crowd at full volume.
Steely McBeam
The Steelers introduced mascot Steely McBeam in 2007, a character built around the city’s steelmaking identity and football culture.
“A mascot with a steel beam?” the Captain said. “Now that sounds useful for a roof.” The Parrot immediately hid the construction drawings.
